Responsibilities of Airport Security Officers
An airport is perhaps one of the busiest public places. There are plenty of people constantly going in and out of an airport – this may include domestic and international passengers, their families and friends who have come to see them off or pick them up, and the airport staff among others. Because of its sensitive nature, security concerns at the airport need to be addressed in the best way possible.
It goes without saying that airport security companies have a tough job to perform. In the event of a mishap, the entire responsibility goes straight to the security company. The security service, thus, has to ensure that three primary responsibilities are being kept as a priority to make the experience safer for all passengers. These jobs are discussed below.
Continuous Monitoring and Surveillance
Airport security companies train their officers to perform continuous monitoring and surveillance of not only the airport premises and buildings but the surrounding areas as well. In the event of a disturbance, there isn’t usually much time to put the counter strategy into action. This is why it is vital that a suspicious activity is caught well in time in order to prevent the disastrous circumstances that it could lead to. With patrolling and security guards stationed in all critical areas and at all checkpoints, it can be ensured that every nook and corner of the airport is covered and meticulous surveillance is being performed around the clock.
Thorough Screening
It is imperative to mention here that the responsibilities of the airport security companies are not confined to the ground. It is also the duty of their officers to ensure the safety of the passengers up in the air. This is why airport security guards are specially trained and are provided with state-of-the-art equipment and machinery to screen each and every passenger who is boarding a plane. Be it the screening of the individual or their baggage, it is the responsibility of the security officer to ensure that nothing gets on the plane that could later be used as a weapon to terrorize the passengers or for any other criminal activity.
Rule of Law
Last but not least, airport security guards are there to promote the rule of law and to ensure that no one considers themselves above it. In the event of a suspicious activity, it is their right and responsibility to thoroughly investigate and question the suspect after apprehending them to get to the bottom of the matter. They also have the authority to arrest the suspect if the need arises. Moreover, if a passenger is causing an unnecessary disturbance or making it harder for the officers to perform their jobs, security is required to escort them out of the airport.
As evident from the information mentioned above, the job of an airport security officer is harder than it seems. It is required for such an officer to be physically fit, highly alert, experienced, and skilled in performing his or her job responsibilities. Only if a security company fulfills these criteria as far as its security guards are concerned can it be taken as a reliable and professional service.
